I love when even a quick snapshot taken on my living room couch turns out this beautiful.

Gargoyles and Goblins

Okay, just gargoyles. I normally don’t like them but the texture on this one in the evening light was too cool to resist.

Who Says I’m Afraid of Bees?

245

Location: on hike in Whitewater State Park

What I Like About This Photo: macro, the contrast in the nest, the unfocused grass in front that dilutes the image a bit, the soft light

Actually, I am afraid of bees. I wish I wasn’t, but I am. I always have been. I always will be. But that doesn’t mean I can’t get up close and get a nice macro shot of their nests. My mom spotted this nest attached to a little branch off to the side of our hiking trail. Good eye mom!

Let me know what you think. I love comments, good or bad.

Past Peak

318

Location: Whitewater State Park in Altura, MN

What I Like About This Photo: definitely the wispy clouds, the color of the sky, and the way the trail wraps around the hillside.

I went camping last weekend in southern Minnesota, hoping to catch the brilliant fall colors, but the colors were past peak. I was astonished. Up north a couple hours, we hadn’t even reached peak. So why, when I drove 2.5 hours south, was this area past peak? The only thing I can figure is this park is situated in a low lying river valley. Once you ventured outside the valley, the colors were what I had hoped for. Oh well, there’s always next year.

Minnesota – not the flatland many think it is

341-2

341-4

Location: Whitewater State Park in Altura, MN

What I Like About This Photo: the colors of both, the matte effect, the roots, the scene, the grittiness of the composition, the sky, and and as always the photojournalistic style.

Many people think of Minnesota as a flat land, but it really isn’t. This picture was even taken in southern Minnesota in a river valley. If you head north, near Canada, the land is far from flat. In all corners of our beautiful state, you will find valleys and bluffs. I’m so thankful to live somewhere that values nature so much and takes great efforts to preserve it. Minnesota State Parks are home to some of the best hiking trails I’ve ever seen and some fine campgrounds as well. Not that I want to encourage you to stay there; that would make the trails and campgrounds busier than they already are.

I edited both photos and like the colors in both. I can’t decide which I like better. The top one has a very old feeling, where the bottom has bolder colors. Which one do you like better? Comment below.
