Past Peak

Location: Whitewater State Park in Altura, MN

What I Like About This Photo: definitely the wispy clouds, the color of the sky, and the way the trail wraps around the hillside.

I went camping last weekend in southern Minnesota, hoping to catch the brilliant fall colors, but the colors were past peak. I was astonished. Up north a couple hours, we hadn’t even reached peak. So why, when I drove 2.5 hours south, was this area past peak? The only thing I can figure is this park is situated in a low lying river valley. Once you ventured outside the valley, the colors were what I had hoped for. Oh well, there’s always next year.

Minnesota – not the flatland many think it is

341-4

Location: Whitewater State Park in Altura, MN

What I Like About This Photo: the colors of both, the matte effect, the roots, the scene, the grittiness of the composition, the sky, and and as always the photojournalistic style.

Many people think of Minnesota as a flat land, but it really isn’t. This picture was even taken in southern Minnesota in a river valley. If you head north, near Canada, the land is far from flat. In all corners of our beautiful state, you will find valleys and bluffs. I’m so thankful to live somewhere that values nature so much and takes great efforts to preserve it. Minnesota State Parks are home to some of the best hiking trails I’ve ever seen and some fine campgrounds as well. Not that I want to encourage you to stay there; that would make the trails and campgrounds busier than they already are.

I edited both photos and like the colors in both. I can’t decide which I like better. The top one has a very old feeling, where the bottom has bolder colors. Which one do you like better? Comment below.

Bear Head Lake – Ely, MN

Another great shot of Bear Head Lake. The weather was temperamental that day. I like the dark clouds against the blue sky and the sun peaking through into the boat.

Serenity Now!

This photo was taken at Bear Head Lake State Park in Ely, MN with an iPhone. This park has been voted the #1 park in the nation and once you visit, you will see why. The lake is surrounded by entirely pristine forests so great pictures abound. If you can withstand the black flies, the fishing is good and you might even see some wildlife on the shore.

What I like about this photo: the contrast, the bold colors, the panoramic effect the iPhone does, the serenity of it. I can picture myself on that boat right now.
